The most notable skill tactic that horror film producers utilize are jump scares. Jump scares are the instance in which someone or something comes out of nowhere for the purpose of frightening the audience, where they do not expect it. Gore is another technique directors use in their horror films. Gore is blood that has been shed, especially as the result of violence. Blood or guts are still used in horror films today and could add scarier elements to the overall film. Tight frames are seen throughout this genre in order to induce anxiety by the viewer. These frames do not allow individuals to see what is around the protagonist.
d. Marketing:
- Tease what the "monster" is. Whether it is an actual creature or a murderer, anything that lurks in the film. This intrigues possible viewers by showing them hints as to what force is coming for them.
- Revealing a scare in a trailer before the horror film is released spoils the movie entirely because viewers know when it happens.
- Building suspense allows the audience to connect the dots themselves and express a narrative for their overall campaign.
- Do not have "an end." Have the ending scene seem as though the plot could continue in a sequel, leaving the audience in curiosity.
e. "The Visit" by M. Night Shyalam, Jason Blum, and Marc Bienstock, is an example of the horror genre. This film is about two siblings who become increasingly frightened by their grandparents while visiting their house on vacation. This movie embodies horror characteristics because of their random jump scares and the odd message, being afraid of grandparents, it reveals to the audience. The plot in "The Visit" captivates the viewers attention because the abnormal scenes in the house are unpredictable. The grandparents' scary and peculiar behavior is what ties the viewers in and captivates them the entire time.
f. "The Boy" directed by William Brent Bell is another example of a horror film. In this movie, the odd plot of a doll coming to life adds incredible suspense throughout the entirety of the film. The doll goes after a human in attempts of murdering her. Having a nonliving character as the "monster" in this movie intrigues audiences because they do not know what the doll is capable of. "The Boy" invokes hidden fears; it is ironic that a doll is usually made for entertainment, but is utilized as the main character, in the horror genre, in order to scare viewers.
